On December 5-6, 2024, the faculty of European studies at REMIT’s Romanian partner UBB, hosted the EUXGLOB centre’s fourth annual international conference, this year focused on the the European Union after the 2024 elections (trends, perspectives, relations with the world).

The conference also included a REMIT side event with the participation of 4 REMIT researchers from UBB (prof. Valentin Naumescu, assoc. prof. Raluca Moldovan and PhD candidate Florina Caloianu) and Maastricht University, moderated by prof. Roberta Haar. The event consisted in the simulation of a scenario testing game focused on military AI in the context of 2 different given settings. The game involved the participation of 11 players who took on the role of different stakeholders (e.g., EU agencies, international organisations, the private sector) and attempted to achieve their long-term goals within the framework of certain given parameters.

The game also included a debriefing session at the end in which the players analysed the impact of the different variables with which they were presented and how these affected the outcomes of the 2 scenarios tested. The side event was conceived as a simulation of the scenario testing workshops dedicated to Remit’s core technologies, to be hosted next year by various consortium members.

Besides taking part in the scenario testing game, the 4 REMIT researchers mentioned above, plus prof. Thomas Christiansen from LUISS (who participated online), presented papers in this year’s edition of the EUXGLOB conference, as follows: prof. Haar spoke about the debate in US foreign policy regarding the benefits of multilateralism and China, prof. Christiansen highlighted the risks and opportunities of the EU-China relations against the background of the new Trump administration, prof. Moldovan discussed the implications of Donald Trump’s re-election for various Middle Eastern actors, prof. Naumescu considered various scenarios for a changing EU in a changing world, while Ms. Caloianu’s presentation focused on Romania’s engagement with Ukraine at the International Court of Justice.
