Katja Creutz, the Programme Director of the Global Security and Governance research programme at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs (FIIA) recently published a REMIT opinion piece on the Institute’s website. The comment, titled “The UN Summit of the Future: Neither Breakthrough nor Breakdown”, talks about the much-awaited Summit of the Future – a UN event, taking place in New York on Sept 22-23.
Katja comments additionally: “In times when multilateral cooperation is deteriorating, the UN Summit for Future represents an opportunity for states to ponder global challenges, such as rapid technological development, and how to manage them. Although the expectations are not high on achieving a revamped multilateralism, it is a timely wake-up call for small and major powers alike. The Summit and its concomitant Pact for the Future, including the Global Digital Compact, allows states to recommit to existing international obligations. It also raises the question of fair representation on the table, allowing developing states to make their voices heard. More future talks are, however, needed to turn political promises into real governance efforts.”
Abstract
The complex and interconnected governance challenges facing the world have led the UN to convene a Summit of the Future. Despite the tense international political climate, the aim is for UN member states to come together to lay out a roadmap for transforming global governance.
