On November 14, the Babeș-Bolyai University Faculty of European Studies hosted a high-level REMIT roundtable titled “The European Union’s Strategic Approach to the Black Sea Region – The Role of the Security Hub in the Context of Russia’s Hybrid Warfare”. Bringing together academics, policy experts and practitioners, the event examined how the EU can better coordinate its security, diplomatic and resilience-building efforts in one of its most sensitive neighbourhoods.
The roundtable featured interventions from leading scholars and experts, including Prof. Valentin Naumescu and Assoc. Prof. Raluca Moldovan (UBB), Prof. Corneliu Bjola (Oxford University), Dr. Dorin Popescu (Black Sea House Association), Prof. Radu Carp and Prof. Ștefan Popescu (University of Bucharest), as well as practitioners and analysts such as Romanian MP George Gima, Dr. Olga R. Chiriac (Irregular Warfare Initiative), Prof. Mircea Guina (Tampere University), Tana Foarfă and Dr. Ciprian Grumaz.
Following brief initial interventions of up to ten minutes each, the speakers engaged in an open debate on the challenges and opportunities of strengthening the EU’s presence and responsiveness in the Black Sea region. Discussions highlighted the urgency of addressing hybrid threats, improving situational awareness and strategic communication, and making the Security Hub an effective instrument for enhancing regional security and democratic resilience.
